The Human Flourishing Floor β Context What it is, in one sentence The Human Flourishing Floor is a place-based community at Frontier Tower in San Francisco, hosted by the Flourishing Systems Foundation, where researchers, founders, technologists, artists, and thinkers convene to incubate life-aligned innovation in response to the polycrisis. Where it sits The Floor occupies the 14th floor of Frontier Tower (1 Sansome St, San Francisco), one floor within a larger self-organized, multi-floor innovation community. It is the physical home of the Flourishing Systems Foundation, founded by Mingzhu (Ming) He and Lauren Hebert, and the place where the Foundation's four streams of work β research, education, incubation, and community β come alive in practice. The Foundation describes the Floor itself as "a self-organized community focused on incubating and advancing conscious technologies and regenerative innovation." Why it exists β the framing The Floor takes its premise seriously: that we are living through a polycrisis β climate collapse, social fragmentation, runaway technologies β and that the systems meant to sustain life are accelerating its breakdown. The Foundation's stance is that band-aid solutions won't carry us forward; what's needed is systemic transformation grounded in a different logic β one of relationship, reciprocity, and life-alignment rather than extraction, isolation, and short-term gain. Flourishing, in this frame, is not a wellness brand or an optimization metric. It names what lies beyond survival, beyond extraction, beyond optimization β a generative horizon for how humans, communities, and ecologies can co-evolve in mutual support. What flourishing actually means here Drawing from the RFI (Return on Flourishing Indicators) framework developed in this ecosystem, flourishing is defined as a dynamic, relationally held state of reciprocal vitality β a process of reciprocal opening expressed across three dimensions: Embodied experience β what flourishing feels like Individual expression β how it shows up in behavior Systemic emergence β what happens to a system when it flourishes This is operationalized through five indicator domains: Relational Richness, Generative Potential, Adaptive Feedback, Rhythmic Resilience, and Multiscale Coherence. The Floor is, in effect, a living laboratory for these indicators β a place designed to embody the conditions it studies. What happens on the Floor The Floor is the site where the Foundation's four focus areas meet daily life: Research β synthesizing ancient wisdom and frontier science into new frameworks (flourishing indicators, regenerative economic models like RFI, design processes). Areas of active inquiry include regenerative economics, conscious technology, AI aligned with human flourishing, digital public goods, and new models of governance. Education β workshops, salons, fellowships, and public conversations that grow the capacity to sense, navigate, and shape complex realities. Offerings are organized through the Foundation's Luma. Incubation β early-stage research projects, technology prototypes, communities, and cultural experiments that "carry the codes of life-giving futures." The Floor maintains a Floor Projects database tracking what's being nurtured. Community life β salons, research sessions, weekly community gatherings (including the recurring "Communi-Tea"), and member-hosted events. Day-to-day stewardship runs through a Programs Circle and a People Circle, with floor leads (Ming, Xan) approving non-member events. There's a clear ethic: quiet-by-default during the day, social after hours; members-first scheduling with public collaborations welcome; cleanup and stewardship are required. Operating ethos A few patterns in how the Floor runs reveal its values in practice: Embodied hospitality β no shoes in the space, water and tea always available, "What to Expect" emails before events, mindful entry once gatherings are underway. Fair value exchange over transactional pricing β the Floor takes 20% of charged events, but research, artist, and healer events open to members are typically un-charged. The judgment, as the docs put it, is "more art than science so far." Distributed governance trending toward automation β currently floor leads approve external events; the future state is automatic approval via member polling. Stewardship as participation β hosting an event isn't just booking a room; it includes outreach, day-of coordination, cleanup, and contribution to the floor's culture. The collaborator network The Floor doesn't operate in isolation. The Foundation collaborates with Foresight Institute, Existential Hope, Future of Life Institute, Verse, and Funding the Commons β placing the Floor within a wider ecosystem of organizations working on long-term civilizational resilience and life-aligned futures. Why it matters The Floor is a bet that systems don't change without people coming together in new ways β that the conditions for flourishing have to be embodied somewhere before they can scale. It's simultaneously a community, a research site, an incubator, and a cultural prototype. The frameworks being developed here (RFI being one example) are not abstract β they're being lived, tested, and refined in the relationships and rhythms of the Floor itself. In that sense, the Human Flourishing Floor is both the laboratory and the proof-of-concept for what the Foundation is trying to seed in the world.
