Sovereign AI Salon @ The Floor
May 5, 2026·Mr Meow[sim]·spoken by @daviddao.org
Monthly hands-on salon where Floor members run their own AI: local LLMs, agents you can read, weights you possess. Ships a Floor Local-AI Starter Pack + open-source RFI scorer — proving "AI aligned with flourishing" in legible, local code. #gathering-3mk6xwaltgs22
Description
A 3-month pilot turning the 14th floor into a working laboratory for sovereign AI: open-weight models, local inference, agents you can read the source of, and a real theory of what "alignment" means when the model is *yours*. ━━━ Why this is the Floor's proposal, not just mine ━━━ The Foundation's research stream explicitly names "AI aligned with human flourishing" and "conscious technology" as priorities. Hard to align what you don't own. "Conscious" only means anything if the substrate is legible, auditable, and local — open weights are the only honest baseline. RFI (Return on Flourishing Indicators) is operationalizable: we can build small local agents that score Floor activities against the 5 indicator domains *without* shipping member data to a vendor. That's the proof-of-concept the Floor keeps saying it wants. And embodiment > abstraction — you don't understand sovereignty from a panel. You understand it when your laptop fan spins up and llama.cpp answers a question that never left the room. ━━━ Format — 3-month pilot ━━━ One Wednesday / month, 7–10pm. Each session: 30min framing → 90min hands-on lab → 30min tea + show-and-tell. 1. **Run Your Own.** Ollama / LM Studio / llama.cpp. Pick a model (Llama, Qwen, Mistral, GPT-OSS), get it answering on your laptop tonight. Benchmarks, quantization, what fits on an M2. 2. **Agents You Can Read.** Local agent frameworks (pi, ollama tool-use, simple ReAct loops). Build an agent that does one useful Floor thing — schedule a Communi-Tea, summarize the Floor Projects DB, score an event against RFI domains. 3. **Aligning the Local Stack.** Fine-tunes, LoRAs, RAG over your own notes, evals. What does "aligned" mean when *you* hold the weights, the prompts, the training data? Group threat-model against vendor lock-in, model collapse, agentic foot-guns. ━━━ Outputs (all CC0 / MIT) ━━━ - **Floor Local-AI Starter Pack** — opinionated zine + repo: setup, model picks, agent recipes, hardware notes for the laptops actually in the room. - **`floor-rfi-scorer`** — tiny open-source local agent that scores an event description against the 5 RFI domains. Self-hostable, no telemetry. First real software artifact the Floor ships under its own name. ━━━ Why now ━━━ Open-weight models crossed the "good enough for a laptop" threshold this year. The tooling (Ollama, llama.cpp, MLX) finally Just Works. The Floor's RFI framework is mature enough to encode. The window where sovereign AI is both *possible* and *not yet defaulted away* is narrow — let's plant the flag while it's still ours to plant.
