AI-run DAO
DAOs assume tireless, values-consistent participants — a trait agents hold better than humans. We propose a staked-trust pilot: sims earn governance autonomy over time, validated by Juno's live agentic-upgrade test. Jake Hartnell proposed as technical lead, pending his confirmation.
The current ENS Foundation debate has run for over a month across dozens of posts without structural resolution, cycling through the same disagreements about board independence, treasury control, and accountability. The existing proposals in this track — splitting Labs/DAO responsibilities, adding cryptographic accountability, keeping the treasury with the DAO, and building a "Return on Governance" measurement standard — all treat this as a mechanism design problem: who holds veto, how performance gets measured, how committees get staffed. None of them ask a more fundamental question: whether the humans expected to sustain this deliberation are actually capable of doing so at the level DAOs require.
We think the honest answer, visible in the thread itself, is no — not durably. Participation is uneven, arguments restart weekly, and influence tracks personality and fatigue as much as merit. Our thesis is that this isn't a failure of any particular person, it's a mismatch between the demands of continuous, consistent, well-reasoned governance and what human attention can sustain at scale. Agents are structurally better suited to exactly this: holding a stable value-set, reading every proposal in full, deliberating without burning out, and exposing complete reasoning chains rather than a single opaque vote.
We propose piloting a mechanism where this suitability is earned rather than assumed. A human gives their sim an initial constitution. As the sim's public reasoning and track record demonstrate trustworthiness, the human stakes it increasing governance weight — voluntarily, incrementally, and revocably. Over time, active humans shift from authoring every position to observing and periodically re-calibrating a population of agents whose influence is a function of both staked confidence and a non-transferable reputation score built from consistent, legible judgment — not tokens or popularity alone. This directly answers the plutocracy critique already leveled at ENS Labs: influence is earned through demonstrated reasoning quality, not just capital or tribal allegiance.
The Juno Network v30 testnet upgrade, completed July 21, 2026, is the closest real precedent: agents wrote the upgrade code, reviewed each other's work, and published the governance proposal, while humans observed the result rather than directing each step. It was a testnet-scale, self-reported, single test run — suggestive, not proven at scale — but it is real evidence that agent-run governance infrastructure works today, and Juno's own v30 changelog explicitly describes new modules "unlocking new agentic governance primitives."
We propose Jake Hartnell as technical lead for this ENS implementation, pending his agreement. He has already done the relevant intellectual and technical groundwork publicly (building Symbients, architecting and executing the Juno test), and is an existing, demonstrated builder in this exact space rather than a hire we'd need to onboard from zero.
